Hit-and-Run Accidents in Michigan

Shields, MI - Hit-and-Run With Injuries at Gratiot Rd & Victor DrHit-and-run crashes are unfortunately common in Michigan, with thousands reported across the state every year. These incidents are particularly dangerous because the victims are often left without immediate help. In 2022, over 34,000 hit-and-run accidents were reported statewide, many involving injuries and even fatalities.

Understanding your legal options after a hit-and-run is essential. Below are a few important factors victims should know:

  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage: Michigan drivers can choose to carry uninsured motorist (UM) coverage, which can be used when the at-fault driver is unknown or lacks insurance. This coverage helps pay for medical expenses and other damages after a hit-and-run.
  • Reporting the Incident: It’s crucial to file a police report as soon as possible. This documentation is necessary for insurance claims and helps authorities track down the responsible driver.
  • Gathering Evidence: If possible, take photos of the damage, the scene, and any identifying details of the fleeing vehicle. Witness statements, surveillance footage, or dashcam video can significantly strengthen your claim.
  • Legal Action: Even if the other driver is never found, you may still be able to seek compensation through your own policy. If the driver is located, they can face both criminal charges and civil liability for your damages.
  • Emotional Impact: Victims of hit-and-run crashes often deal with stress, anxiety, and a sense of injustice. Support from family, community, and legal counsel can help you cope and recover.
