Southfield, MI - Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Southfield Fwy Near Lodge

Southfield, MI (April 10, 2025) – A pedestrian was killed late Monday night, April 7, in a tragic crash on the southbound Southfield Freeway just south of the Lodge Freeway in Southfield.

The incident was first reported around 11:15 p.m. when multiple calls came into the Detroit Regional Communication Center. According to reports, a man was seen walking on the southbound Southfield Freeway service drive near 9 Mile Road. Additional callers noted he had entered the center lane of traffic and was eventually lying in the roadway.

Troopers with the Michigan State Police and officers from the Southfield Police Department responded to the scene, where they found the individual. He was pronounced dead at the location.

Preliminary findings suggest the pedestrian was walking from the right shoulder into active lanes of traffic when he was struck by a passenger vehicle. The driver of that vehicle immediately pulled over and remained on the scene. The pedestrian was then hit by several other cars, whose drivers did not stop.

Authorities confirmed that impairment was not a factor for the driver who stopped. The pedestrian did not have identification on him, and troopers were unable to identify him using a mobile fingerprint scanner. The investigation is ongoing as the medical examiner works to confirm the man’s identity.

Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost his life in this incident.

Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Southfield, MI - Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Southfield Fwy Near LodgePedestrian fatalities remain a serious concern across Michigan. In 2023, over 180 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related incidents throughout the state. These accidents often happen at night or in areas without adequate lighting or sidewalks, placing pedestrians at higher risk.

Here’s a closer look at some common issues surrounding pedestrian crashes and what victims’ families may need to consider:

  • Low Visibility and Nighttime Walking: Most fatal pedestrian accidents occur in low-light conditions. Drivers may have difficulty spotting individuals walking near or in the roadway, especially on highways or service roads where pedestrian presence is unexpected.
  • Failure to Yield Right of Way: Drivers may not always follow pedestrian right-of-way laws, particularly at intersections or crosswalks. However, on highways or service drives, pedestrians are generally not permitted, leading to increased danger and legal complexities.
  • Multiple-Vehicle Involvement: When multiple vehicles are involved in a crash—especially when some leave the scene—it can complicate both the investigation and any compensation claims. Surveillance footage and witness statements often become key.
  • Hit-and-Run Drivers: Unfortunately, many pedestrian fatalities involve drivers who flee the scene. Identifying and locating those drivers may take time, and families often struggle to get answers or justice without legal support.
  • Emotional Toll and Funeral Costs: Losing a loved one suddenly creates immense emotional and financial strain. Funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and the burden of unanswered questions add to the weight families carry in the aftermath.
