Motorcycle Accidents in Michigan

Detroit, MI - Motorcycle and Car Crash on E Jefferson Ave Causes InjuriesMichigan roads see thousands of motorcycle crashes each year. Despite making up a smaller share of total traffic, motorcyclists account for a disproportionate number of serious injuries and fatalities. According to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, more than 2,000 motorcycle-related injuries occur across the state annually.

Here are a few common dangers and outcomes often seen in motorcycle crashes:

  • Reduced Visibility for Drivers: Motorcycles are smaller and often harder to see than cars or trucks. This makes them more vulnerable in situations like lane changes, intersections, or when cars make left turns. Many crashes occur simply because the driver of the other vehicle didn’t see the motorcyclist in time.
  • Lack of Protection in a Crash: Unlike cars, motorcycles offer no surrounding structure to absorb impact. As a result, even low-speed crashes can cause serious trauma such as broken bones, head injuries, or internal damage.
  • Ejection and Road Rash: Riders can be thrown from their motorcycles during a crash, often resulting in road rash, abrasions, and more severe complications like spinal injuries. Even with safety gear, the force of impact can be dangerous.
  • Impairment or Distraction from Other Drivers: Alcohol, phone use, and distracted driving contribute heavily to motorcycle crashes. A distracted driver may not notice a motorcyclist in time to react, increasing the risk of collision.
  • Weather and Road Hazards: Slippery roads, potholes, or debris can have more severe effects on motorcycles than on four-wheeled vehicles. These conditions require extra attention and can lead to loss of control.
