Shelby Twp., MI – Multi-Vehicle Crash Blocks 23 Mile Rd

Shelby Twp., MI (April 5, 2025) - Just after 10:00 p.m. on April 3, a serious multi-vehicle collision occurred along 23 Mile Road in Shelby Township, Michigan. The crash happened on the westbound lanes just above the Van Dyke Expressway, prompting a swift response from the Shelby Township Police Department and other emergency services.

Officials quickly shut down all westbound lanes in the area to manage the scene and attend to those involved. Details remain limited, but multiple vehicles were reportedly involved in the collision. At least one person was injured and treated on site before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care. Traffic was brought to a standstill as emergency crews worked to clear the scene, and detours were put in place to redirect drivers away from the blocked stretch of roadway.

Authorities have yet to release information about the number of vehicles involved or the extent of all injuries. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with law enforcement expected to review any nearby traffic cameras and speak with witnesses to better understand what led to the incident.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Michigan

Shelby Twp., MI – Multi-Vehicle Crash Blocks 23 Mile RdCar accidents remain one of the most common causes of injury and death in Michigan. The state reported tens of thousands of crashes in recent years, many involving multiple vehicles on busy roadways like expressways and intersections. Whether caused by weather, distracted driving, or mechanical failure, these collisions can have lasting impacts on victims and families.

Here are some of the common causes of multi-vehicle crashes and how they affect the outcomes:

  • Tailgating and Following Too Closely: In high-speed areas, one vehicle braking suddenly can trigger a chain reaction. Drivers who follow too closely often don't have enough time to stop, leading to multi-vehicle pileups.
  • Distracted Driving: Texting, adjusting the radio, or looking at GPS can cause a driver to miss changes in traffic patterns. Even a second’s distraction can result in a crash, especially during heavy traffic flow.
  • Weather Conditions: Rain, ice, or snow can reduce visibility and road traction. Drivers unprepared for slick roads often lose control, which can cause others to crash while trying to avoid them.
  • Speeding: Driving above the speed limit or too fast for conditions decreases reaction time. When several cars are involved, high speeds increase the chances of serious injuries.
  • Improper Lane Changes: Without signaling or checking blind spots, sudden lane changes can force nearby drivers to swerve or brake suddenly, increasing the risk of collision.
