Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Saginaw, MI – Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Veterans Memorial Pkwy Near Crow Island RdMichigan continues to see a troubling number of pedestrian-related accidents each year. In 2022, more than 1,500 pedestrian crashes occurred statewide, leading to over 180 fatalities. These incidents are especially dangerous as pedestrians have no protection when struck by a vehicle, making serious injuries or death much more likely.

When a tragedy like this occurs, understanding potential legal rights and options can help families take the next steps forward. Below are common causes of pedestrian crashes across Michigan:

  • Poor Visibility: Accidents often happen during nighttime or early morning hours when lighting is limited. Drivers may not see pedestrians crossing streets or walking along the roadway until it's too late, especially in poorly lit or rural areas.
  • Distracted Driving: A driver looking at their phone or not paying full attention to the road may fail to spot a pedestrian in time. Even a momentary distraction can have fatal consequences for someone on foot.
  • Speeding: Higher speeds reduce a driver’s reaction time and increase stopping distance. In pedestrian crashes, speeding can mean the difference between a near miss and a fatal impact.
  • Failure to Yield: Pedestrians often have the right of way at crosswalks and intersections, but drivers sometimes ignore or fail to notice them. Failing to yield is a leading factor in pedestrian crashes.
