Car Accidents in Michigan

Saginaw, MI – Injury Crash Reported at Mackinaw St & McCarty RdEvery year, Michigan experiences a high volume of vehicle crashes, and many result in injuries that require emergency care. In 2022, the state recorded over 70,000 injury-related crashes. Whether on highways or local intersections, these accidents continue to impact communities across the state.

When someone is involved in a car crash, understanding how the insurance process works is critical. Here are a few important things to know about filing a claim in Michigan:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Michigan’s no-fault system requires drivers to carry PIP insurance, which covers medical expenses, lost wages, and replacement services—regardless of who caused the accident. It’s designed to ensure fast access to care, but it doesn’t cover property damage.
  • Mini-Tort Claims: If another driver is found at fault for damaging your vehicle, you may be eligible for a mini-tort claim, which can reimburse you up to $3,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. This requires proving fault and collecting supporting documentation, such as police reports or repair bills.
  • Third-Party Lawsuits: If you suffer serious injuries that meet Michigan’s threshold for legal action, you can pursue a third-party claim against the at-fault driver. This may allow recovery of pain and suffering damages and excess medical costs not covered by your policy.
  • Timelines for Filing: Michigan law gives you three years to file a lawsuit for injury claims and one year for no-fault benefits. Failing to act within those deadlines may result in lost compensation, so it’s important to act quickly.

If you were hurt in a crash, speaking with a Saginaw car accident attorney as soon as possible can make all the difference. A lawyer can help protect your rights, gather important evidence, and fight for fair compensation.
