Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Macomb, MI – Pedestrian Suffers Injuries After Being Struck on Garfield RdPedestrian-related accidents remain a growing concern across Michigan. In 2022 alone, nearly 2,000 pedestrians were struck by vehicles in the state, with many incidents resulting in severe or fatal injuries. Intersections—especially those with high traffic volumes—are among the most common locations for these tragic events.

It’s important to understand some of the major risk factors contributing to pedestrian accidents:

  • Failure to Yield at Crosswalks: Drivers not yielding to pedestrians in marked crosswalks is one of the leading causes of these accidents. Even when pedestrians follow the rules, inattentive drivers can cause serious harm.
  • Poor Visibility and Lighting: Many pedestrian crashes occur during low-light hours or in areas with poor street lighting. Drivers may not see someone crossing until it's too late to stop safely.
  • Distraction Behind the Wheel: Texting, adjusting the radio, or using GPS systems takes a driver’s eyes off the road. In busy intersections or near sidewalks, this can have devastating consequences for those on foot.
  • Speeding in Urban Areas: Speed limits are reduced in pedestrian-heavy areas for a reason. When drivers exceed those limits, stopping distances increase—and the likelihood of serious injury rises dramatically.
  • Turning Vehicles Failing to Look for Pedestrians: When making turns at intersections, drivers often focus solely on vehicle traffic and miss people in crosswalks. This type of oversight has led to countless preventable injuries.
