Car Accidents in Michigan

Macomb Co., MI – Deputies Respond to Two-Vehicle Crash at St. Francis ChurchMotor vehicle accidents in Michigan are unfortunately common, with tens of thousands of crashes reported annually. These incidents don’t only happen on public roadways—many collisions take place in parking lots and on private property, where right-of-way rules may be less clear. These types of accidents can still cause significant injuries and damages.

Here’s what victims should be aware of when it comes to crashes on private property:

  • Insurance Claims Can Be Complicated: Because the accident occurred on private property, questions may arise regarding which insurance policy applies. Sometimes liability may be shared, or the property owner’s insurance could come into play.
  • Lack of Witnesses: Private property crashes often happen without many people around, making it harder to gather statements or evidence. This can complicate determining fault.
  • Surveillance Footage Might Help: If the property has cameras, this footage can be vital. It may help establish the sequence of events and determine which driver was at fault.
  • Injuries Are Still Serious: Even in low-speed parking lot crashes, injuries like whiplash, broken bones, or soft tissue damage are common. These may not be immediately apparent and can worsen over time.
  • Police Reports Still Matter: Although not always required on private property, having a police report can be useful for insurance claims and potential legal action. It provides a neutral account of what occurred.
  • Confusion About Liability: Determining who’s responsible in these cases can be tricky. In some instances, signage or poorly maintained lots may contribute to fault.
