Kalamazoo, MI – 7 Hurt After Vehicle Slams Into Gas Pump on Westnedge Ave

Kalamazoo, MI (March 22, 2025) - A chaotic scene unfolded Thursday afternoon, March 20, when a speeding vehicle left South Westnedge Avenue and slammed into a gas pump at the Speedway station near Buchanan Avenue and Denway Drive in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The incident led to multiple injuries, with two people requiring hospitalization.

According to Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officials, the crash began when a driver lost control while traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle left the roadway, crashed into a gas pump, and then struck two motorcycles and two other cars nearby. Flames and debris scattered across the station’s lot, drawing a swift response from emergency crews.

Authorities said one individual suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. A second victim was also transported to the hospital and is believed to be in stable condition. Five others were evaluated at the scene for various injuries. The crash prompted a temporary shutdown of the gas station while first responders cleared the area and initiated their investigation. Firefighters remained on site to monitor for any fuel leaks or additional hazards related to the damaged pump. As of now, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We hope all seven individuals hurt in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Michigan

Kalamazoo, MI – 7 Hurt After Vehicle Slams Into Gas Pump on Westnedge AveAcross Michigan, serious collisions continue to impact thousands of lives every year. In 2022, there were more than 293,000 crashes statewide, with over 70,000 resulting in injury. Accidents involving multiple vehicles, motorcycles, or fuel sources—such as gas pumps—can have particularly dangerous outcomes.

Understanding some of the key injury patterns helps provide insight into what victims may endure after a crash like this. Here's a closer look at common injuries sustained in multi-vehicle collisions:

  • Burn Injuries: Crashes involving gas stations or fuel leaks can pose a serious risk of burns. Even a minor spark can ignite gasoline, leading to fires or explosions. Victims may face long hospital stays, skin graft surgeries, and emotional trauma from their injuries.
  • Spinal Cord Trauma: The force of an impact, especially in high-speed crashes, can cause damage to the spine. This can lead to temporary or permanent mobility issues. Many victims require physical therapy, specialized care, or adaptive equipment for daily life.
  • Internal Injuries: Damage to organs from blunt force trauma can be life-threatening. These injuries often go unnoticed at the scene, making early hospital evaluation essential. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical for recovery.
  • Fractures and Dislocations: Broken bones are common in high-impact crashes. Arms, legs, and ribs are especially vulnerable. Some fractures may require surgery, and recovery can take weeks or months.
