Ash Twp., MI – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Telegraph Rd

Ash Twp., MI (March 22, 2025) - A crash involving a pedestrian occurred on Thursday night in Ash Township, Monroe County. According to the Michigan State Police Monroe Post, troopers were called to the scene around 8:30 p.m. on March 20 following reports of a car vs. pedestrian incident on Telegraph Road near Carleton Rockwood Road.

Initial findings indicate that a black Ford Escape, driven by a 39-year-old woman from Carleton, was heading north on Telegraph Road when the vehicle struck a pedestrian walking in or near the roadway. The pedestrian, a 31-year-old man also from Carleton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and remained at the scene, fully cooperating with investigators. Authorities do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash at this time.

Telegraph Road was closed for several hours as troopers from the Michigan State Police conducted a detailed investigation. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Ash Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and Michigan Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Ash Twp., MI – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Telegraph RdPedestrian crashes in Michigan have been a growing concern in recent years. In a recent reporting year, there were over 1,900 pedestrian-involved crashes across the state, with nearly 200 fatalities. These accidents often happen at night, on rural roadways, or in areas with limited visibility or lack of pedestrian infrastructure.

Several key factors contribute to these devastating incidents. Let’s take a look at some of the conditions that make pedestrians especially vulnerable:

  • Low Visibility at Night: Many pedestrian crashes occur after dark. Without reflective clothing or proper street lighting, drivers may have little time to react, especially at higher speeds.
  • Lack of Sidewalks or Crosswalks: In rural or semi-rural areas, pedestrians may have to walk on road shoulders or cross at unmarked areas. This increases the risk of being struck by passing vehicles.
  • Driver Inattention: Even without speeding or intoxication, distracted drivers can easily miss seeing a pedestrian until it’s too late. Glancing at a phone or looking away for a moment can have fatal consequences.
  • Speeding on Major Roadways: High-speed roads such as Telegraph Road are not designed for pedestrian activity. When someone is walking near the roadway, any collision is likely to result in serious or fatal injuries.
  • Poor Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, or snow can reduce visibility and make roads slick, giving drivers less time and space to avoid a pedestrian. These environmental hazards compound the danger of walking near traffic.
