Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan

Sturgis Twp., MI – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Michigan 66Michigan reports hundreds of pedestrian fatalities each year, many of which occur in low-visibility conditions or high-speed areas. According to state crash data, in 2022 alone, nearly 2,000 pedestrian-involved crashes occurred, leading to a significant number of severe injuries and deaths. Pedestrians face heightened risks, particularly when walking or using non-motorized transportation along roadways at night.

Common causes of pedestrian accidents include:

  • Low Visibility – Many pedestrian crashes happen during early morning or nighttime hours when drivers have difficulty spotting individuals on the road. Wearing reflective clothing and using lights can help improve visibility.
  • Failure to Yield – Drivers failing to yield the right-of-way at intersections or crosswalks frequently contribute to pedestrian accidents, especially on highways or busy streets.
  • Distracted Driving – Cell phone use, adjusting the radio, or other distractions reduce reaction time, increasing the likelihood of striking a pedestrian.
  • Speeding – Excessive speed not only increases stopping distance but also amplifies the force of impact, making injuries far more severe or fatal.
  • Roadway Design – Lack of sidewalks, street lighting, or pedestrian crossings can make walking or using non-motorized transportation more dangerous.
