Ludington, MI (November 22, 2024) - A Pentwater woman lost her life after being struck while assisting at the scene of a crash on US Highway 31 near Ludington on Wednesday evening, November 20.
Emergency responders were dispatched at 8:21 p.m. to the U.S. 31 median near the Ludington Rest Area in Mason County's Summit Township, according to a statement from the Mason County Sheriff's Office. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two heavily damaged vehicles in the median and a third vehicle, unrelated to the crash, parked on the west shoulder of southbound U.S. 31. Two pedestrians were located in the median with injuries sustained from being hit while outside their vehicles. One of the pedestrians, a 35-year-old woman from Pentwater, was transported to Corewell Hospital in Ludington, where she was later pronounced dead.
Initial findings from the sheriff's office crash reconstruction team indicate that a silver Pontiac G6 traveling southbound on U.S. 31 lost control, spun out, and came to rest in the median. A second vehicle stopped on the shoulder of the southbound freeway, and its occupants exited to assist those in the Pontiac.
The third vehicle involved, a 2021 GMC pickup truck driven by a 37-year-old man from Shelby, also lost control while heading southbound. The pickup veered into the median, striking the two individuals who had stopped to help and subsequently colliding with the Pontiac, according to the report. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.
