Car accidents in Michigan are a significant concern, with the state consistently reporting high numbers of traffic-related incidents each year. According to the Michigan State Police, there were 282,640 reported crashes in Michigan in 2022, resulting in 1,083 fatalities and 75,838 injuries. These accidents can lead to a wide range of injuries, some of which can have long-lasting or permanent effects on victims.
Among the most common injuries sustained in car accidents are soft tissue injuries, such as whiplash. Whiplash occurs when the neck is suddenly jolted back and forth, causing damage to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This injury is particularly common in rear-end collisions and can result in chronic pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion.
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are another frequent and serious outcome of car accidents. TBIs can occur when the head is struck or violently shaken, leading to concussions, contusions, or more severe brain damage. Victims of TBIs may experience cognitive impairments, memory loss, headaches, and changes in behavior, often requiring extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
Fractures and broken bones are also prevalent in car accidents. The force of a collision can easily break bones in the arms, legs, ribs, and other parts of the body. These injuries can be particularly debilitating, often requiring surgery, physical therapy, and long recovery periods.
Spinal cord injuries are among the most severe injuries that can result from car accidents. Damage to the spinal cord can lead to partial or complete paralysis, significantly impacting the victim’s quality of life. Even less severe spinal injuries, such as herniated discs, can cause chronic pain and mobility issues.
