Fatal dog attacks not only cause immense physical harm but also leave families grappling with profound emotional trauma and financial burdens. In Michigan, families who have tragically lost loved ones in such devastating incidents have legal recourse through filing wrongful death claims to seek justice and compensation for their losses.
When a fatal dog attack occurs, the surviving family members can pursue a wrongful death claim against the dog owner or any other party deemed responsible for the incident. To file a wrongful death claim in Michigan, certain criteria must be met, including establishing that the death was directly caused by the dog attack and that the liable party acted negligently or recklessly.
Through a wrongful death claim, families may seek recoverable damages such as funeral and burial expenses, medical bills related to the victim's injuries before passing, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and emotional distress. These damages aim to provide some measure of financial relief and acknowledgment of the immeasurable loss suffered by the family due to the fatal dog attack.
