Dog bites are not something to take lightly. They can lead to infections, even without the threat of rabies, which might necessitate costly medical treatment. The emotional impact of a dog bite can also leave lasting effects. It’s important for anyone bitten by a dog in Michigan to know they have the right to seek financial compensation for their injuries.
If you are bitten severely, it’s crucial to get medical help right away. Dog bites can introduce dangerous infections. Even a small bite should prompt a visit to the doctor to prevent infection.
Many people try to handle dog bite wounds at home, cleaning the wound with soap and hot water to kill germs. While this is a good first step, it might not be enough to ward off serious infection, so a trip to the emergency room is still a wise choice. After receiving medical care, reporting the incident to the local health department is essential, especially if the dog is a stray, as there’s a risk of rabies. If the dog has an owner, notifying the authorities and animal control is necessary. Identifying the owner could improve your chances of getting compensated, often through their homeowner's insurance.
