In the case of a major accident, the risk that victims would have significant injuries and other damages is greatly increased when commercial trucks, such as semis, tractor-trailers, 18-wheelers, delivery and freight vehicles, and dump trucks, are involved. Trucks weigh more than 10,000 pounds on average and may weigh up to 80,000 pounds when fully loaded, making them very dangerous when involved in an accident.
Drivers in Michigan are covered by no-fault personal injury protection (PIP) compensation from their insurers after an accident, regardless of who was at fault.
However, special care must be used when dealing with situations involving truck accidents. For instance, the federal government mandates that commercial transportation companies carry insurance with a $750,000 minimum coverage limit. First-party and third-party claims can be filed by any party involved in an automobile accident in Michigan, so long as they have the necessary insurance.
In other words, if you've been hurt in a car or truck accident in Michigan, you may make a claim with your own insurance carrier to get reimbursed for your medical bills, lost wages, and automobile repairs. Victims of vehicle or truck accidents can seek compensation from those they consider liable by filing a claim for damages. It's crucial to consult an attorney following a truck accident to determine your legal alternatives, but the plaintiff may be able to seek compensation for their suffering through a third-party claim.
