What to Do After a Crash in Michigan

Lansing, MI - Injury Vehicle Collision Shuts Down US 127 at Lake LansingFirst and foremost, the most important consideration following an automobile accident in the Great Lakes State is protecting your health and your legal rights. Call 911 for emergency assistance after an automobile accident, even if you don't believe you're wounded. From there, it's imperative that you get professional medical attention for your injuries. Unfortunately, it may take hours or days for the full extent of injuries caused in car accidents to become evident. This is why being checked out right away to establish a baseline for your ailments is crucial.

Moreover, make sure you and the other driver exchange information at the scene of the accident. Part of this process is asking for the other driver's full name, phone number, registration details, and contact information for their insurance company. In addition, you should help the police by giving them all the information they need about the accident, but you shouldn't go into too much detail. Don't complicate matters by making lengthy phone calls to the police or insurance providers.

The police will typically look into the incident by examining the scene, interviewing witnesses, and inspecting the vehicles involved for damage. Accident investigators are called in to help police determine what occurred after multi-vehicle collisions. That said, recording your own version of the events and getting your own photos and videos of the accident scene is essential. Document the site of your crash by taking several photographs of the vehicles involved and any resulting skid marks, debris, or property damage. Write down any pertinent information about the weather at the time of the crash, road conditions, and anything else that might have played a role in causing the crash.

Last but not least, consult a personal injury lawyer who has expertise with vehicle accident cases in Michigan. The surest way to guarantee you obtain the compensation you deserve after an accident is to retain the services of a skilled attorney.
