Mason County, MI (November 28, 2023) - Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration are in Mason County to find out why a single-engine plane crashed after takeoff on Sunday, killing two people. The plane crashed into a field less than a mile north of the Mason County Airport off of Meyers Road.
Michigan State Police said a 60-year-old man, a 43-year-old woman, and their two dogs were killed in the crash. The plane crash occurred at 10:01 a.m. on Sunday, per the Michigan State Police. MSP Sgt. Kelsey Case stated that the plane was engulfed in flames upon officers' arrival. The plane was a Socata Turbo Prop 700, capable of carrying seven passengers. Authorities further added that weather conditions at the time of the accident were inclement. State police said the Ludington Fire Department, Hamlin Fire Department, and the Mason County Sheriff's Department also responded to the incident, though the FAA is handling the ongoing inquiry.
We want to offer our deepest condolences to the deceased victims' families.
Plane crashes are fairly uncommon, but single-engine aircraft are much more dangerous than a typical commercial plane. The fatal accident rate for single-piston engine aircraft is 1.63 per 100,000 flight hours. In general aviation, single-engine aircraft are involved in more than 50% of reported accidents. Between 2009 and 2013, the average annual accident rate for small single-engine aircraft was over 30 per 100,000 flying hours.
