Southgate, MI (October 3, 2023) - On Tuesday, a large fire broke out at an elderly housing complex in suburban Detroit, causing injuries to three people and requiring the use of aerial hoses to put out the flames.
The three-story, cross-shaped property known as the Meadows of Southgate caught fire, and images from the scene showed flames shooting through the top. Several sections of the roof had also fallen in.
At around 3:15 p.m., a fire started on a balcony and quickly spread to the roof and attic. According to officials, after the fire started in the attic, it "ran through the whole building."
Southgate's fire chief, Justin Graves, said that three residents needed medical attention and were transferred to a local hospital by ambulance.
Graves also reported that one firefighter and one police officer were brought to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The fire was extinguished by 6:00 p.m., but the investigation is still underway.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families.
