Boston Township, MI (August 31, 2023) - Deputies say one individual was critically hurt in a three-vehicle collision on the interstate near Lowell on Thursday.
The Ionia County Sheriff's Office reports that it occurred at around 2:45 p.m. on westbound I-96 at Hastings Road in Boston Township. According to the sheriff's department, vehicles were entering a construction zone and were coming to a "zipper merge," which required drivers to slow down and merge to the right.
At that time, the driver of a Dodge pickup truck said they were unaware of the slowed traffic and crashed into the back of a Subaru Legacy as a result. Deputies reported the Subaru Legacy stopped after colliding with the highway's wire barriers as a Dodge truck lost control and crashed into the rear of a Honda CR-V. The deputy who responded claimed the Subaru Legacy driver had suffered severe internal injuries. There were "apparent but minor" injuries sustained by the drivers of the Dodge pickup and Honda CR-V.
The Ionia County Sheriff's Office concluded that speed was likely a factor. Deputies have begun their probe and have not released further details.
Our thoughts and best wishes for a complete recovery go out to the injured victims and their loved ones.
