Response to an Accident in the Detroit Area

Even though it's not easy, you should take some basic procedures to protect your legal rights following a car accident in Michigan.

If injuries or property damage from a car accident in Michigan exceed $1,000, the at-fault driver must report the incident to the police. The police report will describe the accident site, name and contact any witnesses, and provide the names and policy numbers of any connected insurance companies.

After that time, immediate medical attention is required. A person's standard of living may be severely diminished by even a small injury. To further demonstrate that the accident was the cause of these problems, it is essential to maintain meticulous records as soon as symptoms develop.

If you have any kind of injury or symptom change after starting treatment, it's important to see a doctor right once. You should keep track of your injury's incidence, severity, any associated costs, and any adjustments to your treatment plan.

If you've been hurt in any way, but particularly if you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, see a doctor right away:

  • Pain in the head and/or a tingling sensation
  • Lightheadedness
  • Hearing loss or the experience of constant ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Inability to discern details clearly
  • Lack of focus and memory loss
  • Extreme lability of mood and emotional instability

Physical therapy and occupational therapy, in addition to regular checkups with your primary care physician, are necessary for a thorough recovery after an accident. Also, insurance adjusters in Michigan will likely argue that an accident victim who doesn't go to the doctor after an injury must not be hurt and is thus not entitled to benefits or compensation if he or she files a claim or goes to court.
