Shelby Township, MI (August 19, 2023) - The Shelby Township Police Department was alerted to a major motor vehicle collision that happened near Van Dyke Avenue and Elizabeth Ann Road on Friday evening, August 18.
At about 10:50 p.m., officers arrived to find a blue Chevy Tahoe in the northbound lanes of Van Dyke with major front/passenger side damage. There was also a blue Dodge Challenger with significant front-end damage.
Officials further reported finding a 25-year-old woman motionless in the center northbound lanes of Van Dyke with what seemed to be significant injuries. She was identified as traveling in the Tahoe's passenger seat at the time of the collision. Despite life-saving attempts by first responders, she died at the scene.
Two other women, the 26-year-old driver and a 27-year-old passenger in the Challenger, had to be extricated from the car by EMS workers and were taken to Troy Beaumont Hospital. A 43-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Chevy Tahoe also needed to be rescued before being transferred to Troy Beaumont.
Alcohol and speed both seem to have had a role in this collision. However, the incident remains under active investigation, and witnesses were asked to get in touch with Detective Jordan Haughee.
Our deepest condolences are with the deceased woman's family. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.
