Ottawa County, MI (August 11, 2023) - The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office reports that the brakes of a semi-truck locked, causing the vehicle to jackknife and resulting in injuries after a subsequent collision on Friday afternoon.
Around 12:45 p.m., officers responded to the scene and said the crash occurred on eastbound I-96 in Polkton Township, just east of 68th Avenue.
A second tractor-trailer could not avoid the accident and crashed into the jackknifed vehicle. Despite the ongoing inquiry, the sheriff's office has speculated that a technical issue may have caused the brakes to lock.
The second truck's driver, a 57-year-old male from Ontario, Canada, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 34-year-old man from Otsego was driving the truck that jackknifed, and he was also injured and transferred to the hospital for treatment. Aero Med was spotted at the scene, though the extent of the injuries involved is unknown.
Officers continue to investigate the incident at this time.
We would like to extend our thoughts and best wishes for a full recovery to the injured victims.
