Boston Township, MI (August 9, 2023) - On Wednesday afternoon, August 9, one driver was killed after a semi-truck accident occurred near Saranac on Interstate 96.
The incident occurred at around noon in Boston Township, and troopers with the Michigan State Police reported to the westbound lanes of I-96, close to Nash Highway.
According to preliminary accounts from the MSP, a semi-truck failed to slow down for a traffic backup, rear-ending a passenger vehicle and pushing the car into the median. A second truck was also hit and forced into a third tractor-trailer as a result.
The vehicle's driver was ejected from their car and flown to the hospital by helicopter with life-threatening injuries. MSP reports that the victim passed away at the hospital. One of the truck drivers also suffered injuries, although they were not considered life-threatening.
There was no word from the MSP on additional injuries.
As emergency crews investigated the scene, the westbound lanes of Interstate 96 were closed near Nash Highway for about three hours. The highway was since reopened, though the inquiry into the crash remains active in the meantime.
Our deepest condolences go out to the deceased victim's family. We would like to extend our thoughts and best wishes for a full recovery to the injured victims.
