Williams Township, MI (July 21, 2023) - Troopers with the Michigan State Police have released further details after a semi-truck accident happened on Wednesday, July 19, just before 3:00 p.m. and led to a series of secondary collisions.

The collision happened close to 9 Mile Road from U.S. Highway 10 eastbound, according to early reports provided by the MSP. A 59-year-old Harrison man driving a semi-truck collided with a 37-year-old Bay City man who was operating a Hyundai sports car.

A series of chain-reaction collisions were caused by the initial accident. Other vehicles involved in the collision were a Nissan van driven by a 56-year-old from Saginaw and two Chevrolet SUVs driven by 46-year-old women carrying two 14-year-old passengers and a 53-year-old passenger, respectively.

The van and sports car drivers were transferred to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, per authorities. One of the Chevrolet drivers, along with one of the 14-year-old passengers, were also taken to the hospital due to having sustained life-threatening injuries. The second 14-year-old passenger was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital in critical condition, though all three of the latter victims are now in stable condition.

The semi-truck driver and the two occupants of the second Chevrolet SUV received minor medical treatment at the site and were later discharged.

There is currently no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident, but officers are continuing to investigate. No citations or charges have been filed as far as we know.
