Ishpeming, MI (July 19, 2023) - On Monday morning, July 17, in the Ishpeming area, a duplex fire resulted in one person's transfer to an area medical center.
Rescue teams with the City of Ishpeming Fire Department were called to a structure fire at 787 South Pine Street on Monday, just before 4:15 a.m.
Heavy fire was visible from a window at the back of a two-story duplex. Ishpeming firefighters fought the blaze for about 15 minutes before getting it under control. Only the first level of the duplex's apartment caught fire, though crews continued to search for any residual flames and hot spots until 6:00 a.m.
All residents of the building, which was inhabited at the time of the incident, were able to escape. One patient suffered apparent respiratory injuries and was sent to UP Health System-Bell Hospital.
At this point, it is unclear what started the fire. The Red Cross will provide assistance to the residents, and officers with the Ishpeming Police Department are planning to launch an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
