Bicycle accidents claimed the lives of just over 1,000 people in 2018, and these crashes resulted in over 300,000 visits to the emergency room that same year. Nearly eight times as many men were killed in bicycle accidents in 2017 compared to women. Statistics reveal that intersections are involved in more than half of bicycle-motor vehicle collisions nationwide. When a negligent driver of a vehicle causes a collision with a bicycle, they can be held liable for the injured bicyclist's pain and suffering, medical costs, lost wages, and other damages, under Michigan state law. You need to contact an attorney to determine if you have a case and the value of the compensation you are owed. Safe passing laws are meant to prevent needless collisions between motorists and cyclists. They also serve to raise awareness of how drivers and riders should share the road. Most jurisdictions require that the driver of a motor vehicle must leave at least a safe distance while passing a bicycle. Unfortunately, many drivers fail to follow these rules, which causes devastating crashes. If you were injured while riding a bike, you are likely dealing with serious injuries and unexpected damages. The insurance provider of the at-fault party will try to do whatever they can to make sure that they do not have to pay you a substantial sum for your claim. There are many ways a lawyer can help your case, and working with an attorney can maximize your final settlement.
