Newton Twp, MI (July 12, 2023) - A Crystal Falls man died after being involved in a hit-and-run accident in Newton Township on Monday, July 10.
The deadly accident was reported on US-2 near Milakokia Lake Road at around 9:05 p.m. It was later determined that 34-year-old Eric Thomas Gilmour of Grand Blanc was headed westbound in a pickup truck at a high rate of speed in order to pass another vehicle. Gilmour hit a 40-year-old man who was attempting to pass the other car.
The victim was reportedly checking his vehicle, which was legally parked on the shoulder of the highway at the time of the deadly accident. Gilmour did not stop and continued down the road for several miles before pulling over.
Gilmour was transported to Mackinac Straits Hospital before being transferred to Mackinac County Jail.
An ongoing investigation into the deadly accident is in progress.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
There were 34,628 hit-and-run accidents reported in Michigan in 2018. That figure accounts for over 10% of all motor vehicle accidents reported that year. Drivers are more likely to flee the scene after a crash in certain areas of the state, and with each passing year, there are more hit-and-run accidents reported in Michigan cities, including Detroit, Saginaw, Muskegon, and Flint.Losing a loved one is devastating for those closest to the victim. When someone else's negligence is responsible for a fatal accident, the bereaved family may find it difficult to discuss legal and financial matters. You do not have to be alone during this difficult time. In Michigan, any member of the immediate family—spouses, kids, parents, grandparents, or siblings—can bring a claim for wrongful death. There are strict deadlines for bringing a wrongful death claim in the state, and the time to pursue a wrongful death claim starts on the date of the death. These cases typically must be filed within three years after the time of the fatality.
