Due to the size and weight of their vehicles, truck drivers and trucking companies are held to greater standards than other drivers. Both federal and Michigan state regulations are in place to prevent crashes and maintain the safety of other drivers on the road. According to the 2016 Michigan Traffic Crash Facts report, there were 12,479 heavy truck accidents reported in the state, and 17.6% of the trucking injuries were incapacitating. Nearly 0.93% resulted in fatalities. The statistics further claim that 2,194 persons were hurt in crashes involving large trucks and buses that year. If you or a member of your family is injured in an accident involving a huge tractor-trailer rig, it is in your best interest to hire an experienced Michigan truck accident lawyer. Semi-crash injuries can be extremely serious, and you need a lawyer with experience handling these types of cases. The trucking company's attorneys might start destroying crucial evidence as early as three months after the crash, so time is of the essence.Records that can show negligence on the part of the trucking company might be lost in that short period of time. Key evidence from black boxes or electronic data recorders can be destroyed, and waiting makes it more likely that you will not be able to gather the evidence you need to prove liability or damages. For attorneys who are not accustomed to trying semi-crash cases, the situation can be even more challenging, as they may not know what to do until it is too late.
