Accidents happen when they are least expected. Most experienced drivers understand that being a defensive driver is often a smart move while out on the road. It is important to always be aware of the actions of other drivers while behind the wheel, especially due to the extremely high rate of car wrecks caused by driver negligence in the United States. Approximately 94% of all traffic accidents in the country happen due to driver negligence of some kind.
Negligent driving comes in many dangerous forms. The three most common forms of driver negligence in the United States are currently distraction, speeding, and intoxication. Distracted driving claims more than 3,100 lives in the United States every year. One of the most alarming distractions for drivers is texting, which takes your eyes off of the roadway for approximately 5 seconds at a time. At 55 miles per hour, that’s like driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to hear stories concerning a car crash caused by a distracted driver. Despite the fact that all drivers are responsible for driving safely at all times, the number of distracted drivers continues to rise. You are unable to drive safely unless the task of driving has your full and undivided attention, from the time you put the vehicle into drive until you put it into park. Any activity that diverts your attention from the road endangers your own safety and that of your passengers and bystanders.
