Westphalia Twp, MI (December 22, 2021) - Officers with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating a deadly accident that occurred in Westphalia Township. It was reported to the police at approximately 8:24 a.m. on Monday, December 20.
Initial reports reveal that a semi-truck was headed south on Grange Road when it attempted to turn east onto Lehman Road. During the turn, a vehicle collided with the rear-end of the truck.
Police officers state that the vehicle that struck the semi-truck was driven by a male from Lansing. He was pronounced deceased on-site. The driver of the semi sustained no injuries, however.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan State Police, the Portland Ambulance Service, Westphalia Fire and Rescue, and the Clinton County Central Dispatch were all observed assisting at the crash scene.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. No further information has currently been reported.
As of 2016, there are more than 3 million vehicles registered in the state of Michigan. With so many drivers on the roadway, auto accidents happen daily. Many wrecks are only “fender-benders,” that don’t result in injuries or even property damage. Other collisions, however, result in severe or even catastrophic injuries for victims. The worst car crashes are often fatal, accounting for approximately 18% of all accidental deaths in the Wolverine State.
When drivers get behind the wheel intoxicated, distracted, or fatigued, or they choose to drive aggressively or thoughtlessly, they can be held accountable for their actions if they end up causing an accident. Other drivers and vehicle occupants who end up with injuries deserve compensation for their medical costs, lost wages, other out-of-pocket costs, as well as pain and suffering and other non-economic damages.
Traffic accidents involving commercial trucks are often more severe than any other type of accident. This is due to the sheer size and weight of semi-trucks, which are often 20 to 30 times heavier than passenger vehicles. Across the United States, currently, there are more than 11 million trucks actively operating, many with overworked and fatigued drivers carrying hazardous loads. In 2016, approximately 475,000 large truck collisions were reported in the United States. Human error was the leading cause of these wrecks, accounting for more than 90% of them.
