Lansing, MI (December 22, 2021) - One man was killed and four children were hurt on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 21 in a vehicle crash in Lansing. The car they were riding in collided with a bridge abutment on U.S. 27 and caught on fire, according to reports.
The driver was identified as a 33-year-old Lansing man. He was pronounced deceased on-site shortly after the collision occurred around 3:25 p.m. The wreck was reported in the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 near Dunckel Road.
The four children present in the vehicle at the time of the crash were transported to an area medical center with serious injuries, according to police. They were identified as a 4-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy, and a 7-month-old boy.
The 7-month-old and 4-year-old boys were critically injured while the 3-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and the 4-year-old girl had minor injuries. Reports from Wednesday afternoon state that their conditions had been updated to stable.
Authorities in Lansing believe the vehicle was traveling north when it crossed into the median and hit the abutment at the Dunckel Road bridge. At this time, they continue to investigate what caused the vehicle to exit the roadway.
The northbound lanes of the roadway were closed at I-96 while responders worked to secure the scene. No further information has been reported at this time.
