House fires take place more than 40,000 times per year in the state of Michigan. In 2020, more than 100 people lost their lives in approximately 100 fires reported in the Wolverine State. This is a 21% increase in yearly deaths due to house fires since 2019, and a 13% increase in fires, overall. The victims were reportedly 68% male and 31% female.
Victims who die from severe burns or other fire-related injuries often leave behind grieving family members. In addition to the personal tragedy, those left behind are usually faced with enormous medical bills, funeral costs, and now lack the source of income they once relied on. When another person’s negligence is responsible for a fire, like a landlord not obeying fire safety laws or an employer not adhering to workplace safety regulations, the victim’s surviving family members may be able to pursue financial compensation for these and other damages.
