Highland, MI (November 26, 2021) - Four people have been hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a house caught fire in Oakland County on Wednesday, November 25th.
The four people were inside of a home on Milford Road between Munger Road and While Lake Road in Highland Township when it went on fire at about 12:00 a.m.
Officials believe a space heater played a role in starting the fire, which started in the garage and spread to the living area of the home.
One resident, a 41-year-old woman, was trapped in the basement when responders arrived at the home and found it fully engulfed in flames. She refused to leave over concern for a collection of exotic animals including birds, ferrets, and other pets.
Through a small basement window, deputies were able to rescue the woman, one pig, and three dogs.
The woman and three other residents were transported to an area hospital to be treated for heavy smoke inhalation.
Officials say the home was completely decimated by the fire.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Products should be designed for safety and utility. If there is a potential or perceived danger associated with the product, it must be redesigned without compromising its function. If the product cannot reasonably be redesigned, protections need to be put in place. If the danger cannot be alleviated with additional safety measures or by redesign, then the manufacturer is required to give ample warnings that inform the user of the possible risks.
When a product could potentially harm a consumer, it is essential that manufacturers notify the public. If businesses are negligent in warning their customers, and deliberately sell products that could seriously injure or kill those who use them, they can and should be held liable.
