Charleston, MI (November 25, 2021) - A 31-year-old man from Battle Creek died after being ejected from his vehicle after a crash on Interstate 94 on Sunday, November 21st.
Michigan State Police said that, at about 1:45 a.m., the driver lost control of his 2014 Ford car while traveling eastbound on the interstate near milepost 90.
Troopers said the driver is believed to have been drinking and was not wearing a seatbelt when he was ejected from the car.
A passerby and emergency responders from the Galesburg-Charleston Fire Department attempted to revive the driver, but he died at the scene.
His female passenger was taken by ambulance to Borgess Hospital for immediate medical treatment of undisclosed injuries.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
It is not uncommon for a passenger to sustain injuries in a car accident. The AAA Foundation For Traffic Safety reported that the number of passenger injuries and fatalities is actually 50% higher than the rate of driver injuries and fatalities. An extensive study was conducted based on driver age and the rate of deaths and injuries for every 100 million miles driven.
Passenger injury claims can be very complex and are difficult to win due to complex insurance laws. Oftentimes, the driver of the vehicle is the victim’s friend or relative and they are hesitant to file a claim and cause their insurance rates to skyrocket.
